Biography

Robert E. Allen, PhD
Special Assistant
 

After receiving his Ph.D. in medical physiology from Vanderbilt Medical School, in 1969, Dr. Allen accepted a position with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), where he accelerated to the position of Branch Chief.  

In 1976, Dr. Allen left NASA for the position of Special Assistant to the Vice President for Health Affairs at the University of Alabama.  Shortly thereafter, he accepted a fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland.  While a fellow at NIH, Dr. Allen served as primary reviewer for the National Institute of Arthritis, Metabolism and Digestive Diseases (NIAMDD), in addition to serving as Chairman of the Training Grant Appeal Board.

In 1978 he came to the VA Central Office, where he has held several positions including Deputy Director of the AIDS Program Office, until 1991, when he accepted the position of Special Assistant to the ACMD for Environmental Medicine, now the Office of Public Health and Environmental Hazards.
